Starbase - The Celestial Object Database
About This Project:
The goal of starbase.info is to create the world's largest, most complete and most useful database of celestial objects.
According to recent estimates there are approximately 200,000,000,000 galaxies in the known universe. Hubble has revealed an estimated 100 billion but this number is expected to increase as telescope technology improves in the coming years.
Our own galaxy has an estimated 100,000,000,000 stars.
This gives a VERY approximate number of 20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe.
Then you have planets, asteroids, quasars and so on.
Our own star has an estimated between 1,100,000 and 1,900,000 asteroids larger than 3,281 feet (1km) in diameter, and millions of smaller ones.
We will create the structure of the database and input the world's most stars, galaxies, asteroids, planets etc, together with their location and other interesting / useful information.
We will investigate crowd sourcing and automation options to enable accelerated data entry.
Connection of the object database with telescope ID systems, enabling an "internet of things" connection between the database and celestial objects.
